The Birth Assistant provides care for the client and family during labor, birth and the postpartum period at the birth center as well as completes administrative and facility tasks that ensure smooth operation of the birth center.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Licensed as a Registered Nurse or Practical Nurse in the State of Illinois
Previous clinical work experience in intrapartum, postpartum and neonatal care preferred
Current BLS and NRP
Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple demands at once
Demeanor is energetic, welcoming, and engaged when communicating with clients and staff
Active listening skills
Able to complete tasks safely, accurately, and efficiently as delegated by the Certified Nurse Midwife
Self-directed and committed to providing superior care and education to BCC families

Fostering Positive Birth Center Experience:
Create welcoming, inclusive, personalized experience for all clients and visitors at the birth center
Provide competent and respectful communication and interaction to all families regardless of race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, or disabilities
Care During Labor, Birth, and Early Postpartum
Labor and birth care includes monitoring vital signs of laboring client, performing fetal heart rate auscultation using intermittent auscultation, starting IV lines and administering medications as indicated, assisting client with position changes, providing labor support, and assisting midwife with obstetric emergencies such as postpartum hemorrhage and neonatal resuscitation
Postpartum care includes
Ongoing assessment of postpartum client: vital signs, uterine tone, lochia, voiding, oral hydration and nutrition, parenting adjustment, physical needs including assistance with postpartum bath
Ongoing assessment of newborn: vital signs, respiratory status, color, neurological status, feeding, activity
Assist with establishing breastfeeding
Collect and send cord blood as indicated
Discharge care includes reviewing discharge instructions, assisting family in preparations to go home, and scheduling 24-36 hour postpartum / newborn visit
Accompany newborn to hospital in event of transfer
Thorough documentation in EHR
Facility Care
Keep workstations and birth suites neat, clean, and tidy
Clean and restock birth suite after client has been discharged
Emptying trash and biohazard waste into appropriate receptacles
Processing full sharps containers into biohazard
Maintain birth center inventory using electronic worksheet
Weekly and monthly maintenance of autoclave
Sterilize instruments as indicated
Assist with birth center laundry
Stock birth suite storage areas with linens and supplies
Restock birth suite nourishment area
Alert Clinical Director and/or Office Manager of needed supplies and/or maintenance
Administrative Duties
Review and report client lab results in EHR
Review and answer client portal messages / questions
Additional Accountabilities:
Participates in monthly staff meetings, drills / in-service on 1st Friday of each month or as scheduled
Attendance at 10 meetings per 12-month calendar is required and may not be absent for 2 consecutive meetings
Participate in outcome debriefs and/or root cause analysis per review by Clinical Director
Other duties as assigned
Work Schedule:
Current schedule is 24 hours of call every 1 in 3 days and 1 in 3 weekends
Birth assistants must arrive within 60 minutes of being contacted by on-call midwife
Schedule may change to meet the needs of the birth center and current clinical staff
Salary and Benefits:
Salaried pay at $55,000-$60,000 per year, paid biweekly. This is considered an exempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act
PTO is accrued at 120 hours/12 days total per year
Paid holidays generally 10-12 days per year
BCC will fund the premium for the employee’s medical insurance policy
Vision and dental coverage, as well as all dependent medical, vision, and dental policies will be available at the employee’s expense
401k plan available after 1 year of employment
Reimbursement provided for professional recertification fees and state license fees
Continuing education reimbursement of $1000 per 12 month period and paid days off for CE not exceeding 1 day per year
